Getting Here

Getting to Shetland can be done in two ways, by air & by sea.

Sumburgh Airport

Shetland’s main airport is in Sumburgh, the most southerly tip of the mainland. It is around a 30 minute drive from Lerwick & The Grand Hotel. There are direct flights daily from Edinburgh, Glasgow & Aberdeen. All of these have connecting flights with the rest of the United Kingdom.

Information on this can be found in more detail on the HIAL website. You can check for flights & book your way here on the Loganair website.

Northlink Ferries

The overnight ferry leaves Aberdeen every day of the week, leaving around teatime and arriving at 7am the following morning. The ferry has cabins, a bar, lounge, shop, cinema & play area for the little ones!

To find out more about sailings & what the journey is like, please check out the Northlink Ferries website.

Getting Around

People often underestimate how big Shetland really is, you may be used to seeing the isle as a small corner on a map but it is certainly not small, particularly if you want to explore and take in all Shetland has to offer. Shetland is privileged to have an extremely well service network of buses and inter-island ferries. You can find out about the routes on the ZetTrans website.

However, many do not want to be restricted to public transport and want to explore on their terms. There are a number of car hire companies in Shetland. This includes Bolts Car HireGrantfield & Star Rent A Car.
